Community vegetable garden
Tangible heritage
One of the vocations of the Oscata area is agricultural activity for the production of vegetables. All local inhabitants have a vegetable garden, and many people take care of gardens in Oscata even while living in the center of the town of Bisaccia. There are farms in the area that produce and sell vegetables. In short, although an old local saying goes "la vigna e l'uorto vonn' l'omm' muort" (the vineyard and the garden bring a man to extreme toil), the passion and the will to ensure a sustainable and healthy life do not give up.
The social garden established by Oscata inVita was created in 2020 thanks to the sharing by a non-resident landowner of a plot of land no longer in use. Located near the inhabited center, close to the community workshop, the garden is supplied by an artesian well that ensures irrigation. It is managed by Peppino Lapenna, a founding member of Oscata inVita, and produces peppers, potatoes, onions, courgettes, courgette flowers, tomatoes, garlic, celery, basil, and salads — typical ingredients of the classic peasant recipes prepared during the food events "Borgo in Festa" and "La Pigiatura". Some of the vegetables are also used to season the pizzas baked in the community oven, following the tradition before bread baking.
For the Rural Kitchens of Alta Irpinia the garden was a sort of supermarket of the time, where one could pick and immediately consume the necessary daily ration. Some local families continue this habit also following ancient cultivation methods that are still effective.
