About us
ECuRu – Ecomuseum of Rural Kitchens of Alta Irpinia
The Ecomuseum is a non-traditional museum, made up of a territorial area that preserves, promotes, protects, and shares its cultural, environmental, natural, historical, and artistic heritage through the involvement of the local community and institutions.
Through the Ecomuseum, the community of Oscata seeks to revive the rituals, traditions, and customs typical of the Rural Kitchens of the past. This is achieved by using ancient artifacts, rural architecture, and traditional tools to tell the story of old methods and gestures, in an engaging and innovative way, open to the experience of visitors and curious guests.
The community's goal is to show how the functions of today's modern kitchens were once experienced in the past. Within the Ecomuseum, visitors can still discover the skills of a hardworking community of farmers, herders, and artisans who, up until the 1950s, managed to access water, energy, heating, refrigeration, drying, food preservation, and production by using natural resources in a completely different way from today. In the rural village, it is possible to see and relive the entire cycle of producing cereals, cheeses, cured meats, and vegetables.
